Karting & Drifting Exhibition Presented by Drag Racing Promoters Endorsed for EPCAL: Riverhead City Council Debrief

The drag racing promoter at Calverton Enterprise Park will expand its operations this year to include a car show, kart racing and a drift exhibit.
Riverhead City Council passed a resolution at its meeting last Wednesday endorsing the promoter’s request to remove four rainy Sundays from the street drag racing schedule, as well as approving the new “Show and Go Auto Spectacular” app for special events to be held in their venue. . Instead of drag racing, the event will feature drift racing, go-kart tracks and a big car show.
Drag racing promoter Pete Scalzo, who unveiled Race Track Not Street at an industrial park city track two years ago, said the new show would “satisfy people who don’t like drag racing but love drifting, put on car shows and love karting.” . .”
“It will be something else. It will be what people have been asking for,” Scalzo said. According to the Driftworks.com website, drifting is a driving technique in which the driver “uses the accelerator, brake, clutch, gear shift and steering to get the car around a corner.” According to Scalzo, drifting has become very popular. Scalzo said that car drifting would meet the same requirements as his drag racing competition.

Karts are small sports cars that usually fit one person. Scalzo said that many professional Formula One drivers started their careers in karting. Unlike some Long Island facilities that allow drivers to borrow karts to race, drivers must bring their own karts to EPCAL races, Scalzo said.
Scalzo said the safety protocols used for his races, including the use of knitted barriers and metal fencing for crowd control, must also be used for these events at the request of the city’s police chief and fire chief.
Show and Go Auto Spectacular will be held on August 27, September 17, October 1 and October 22 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with a rainy day scheduled for November 5.
The Scalzo racing competition will start in August. Most of these will take place on Saturdays from 2 pm to 9:30 pm. More info: The city is approving 14 drag races in Calverton next year, subject to availability.
